U.S. PREMIERE
WINNER: AICEF Prize For Cross-Cultural Filmmaking, Awarded by the Bali International Film Festival
In 1990, Balinese sculptor Nyoman Nuarta made a promise to build one of the largest statues on Earth. At 121 meters tall, Garuda Wisnu Kencana would portray the Hindu god Vishnu mounted on the mythical bird Garuda, his ultimate tribute to the island of Bali. After 28 years of struggle – from a devastating fire, to a worldwide financial crisis, to death threats – Nuarta had built a monument to sheer determination.
