On November 21 at 7pm, MNFF Selects offers a Town Hall Theater holiday screening of the riveting drama The Teachers’ Lounge, from Turkish director Ilker Çatak. Set in a contemporary time in a German middle school, the film’s compelling central character, Carla Nowak, played by Leonie Benesch, is a dedicated, idealistic young teacher in her first job. Her relaxed rapport with her seventh-grade students is put under stress when a series of thefts occur at the school, and a staff investigation leads to accusations and mistrust among outraged parents, opinionated colleagues and angry students. Caught in the middle of these complex dynamics, Carla tries to mediate—but the more she tries to do everything right, the more desperate her position becomes. As Alissa Wilkinson of the New York Times wrote in her review, “Taking on the uneasy complexity of a progressive modern society, and the friction produced when pluralism and an insistence on order and obedience collide, is a bold move, and The Teachers’ Lounge pulls it off with a sense of tension that makes the whole thing play like a thriller.”
Nominated for the 2023 Academy Award for Best International Feature Film and a winner of major prizes at the Berlin and Palm Springs film festivals, The Teachers’ Lounge has been widely recognized for its exceptional storytelling and taut execution.
MNFF Selects is delighted to offer the Vermont premiere of The Teachers’ Lounge.
